Poseidon Resources announces appointment of new chief executive officer / Poseidon Resources : “Riva joins Poseidon at a time when it is poised for rapid growth after several years of active development of a number of seawater desalination projects. The fifty-million gallon per day Carlsbad, CA project…is set to close project financing later this year.”

U.S. boundary agency names local citizen board / SignOnSanDiego : “Officials at the U.S. Section of the International Boundary and Water Commission have announced the appointment of new and returning board members to the agency’s Citizens Forum.”

The Journey from Semi-Desert to Lemon Grove / Lemon Grove Patch : “The first farmers in the Grove had to find a water well on their property or there would not be much farming. That was true until 1889, when a wooden flume was built to carry precious water down from the Cuyamaca mountains.”

Desalinated groundwater threatened by future landfill / KPBS : “[Oceanside Water Department Director Cari Dale] is concerned that a developer’s proposal to build a landfill at Gregory Canyon could eventually pollute the San Luis Rey river, which feeds into the groundwater basin.”

Concrete placement under way on saddle dam at San Vicente Reservoir / San Diego County Water Authority : “Placement of roller-compacted concrete (RCC) is under way to build a new, 650-foot-long, 40-foot-high auxiliary “saddle” dam. The $450 million project includes the tallest dam raise in the United States and will more than double the reservoir’s current capacity to 242,000 acre-feet.”

Helix Water District approves 6% rate hike / SignOnSanDiego : “The board also voted to change its starting times for its twice-monthly meetings. Citizens have long spoken out about the inconvenient 2 p.m. mid-week meeting times.”

Sewage spill fouls North County creek / County of San Diego : “An estimated 31,650 gallon sewage spill occurred today at the Meadowlark Water Reclamation Facility located at 7941 Corinthia Street in Carlsbad. The spill, which was caused by a break in a six-inch sewer line…”

Surfrider challenges desal plant in appeals court / SignOnSanDiego : “The Surfrider Foundation on Thursday appealed a Superior Court ruling in hopes of reversing regulatory approval of “open ocean” intake of seawater for a proposed desalination plant in Carlsbad.”

CARLSBAD: Lagoon maintenance fund is drying up / North County Times : “Dredging will continue at Batiquitos Lagoon in Carlsbad this October, but the pot of money that pays for the crucial work is shrinking faster than planned —- apparently another victim of the poor economy, officials said.”
