San Diego news websites revamped, but with a few glitches

Posted by George J. Janczyn on December 7, 2009

As part of their recent website redesigns, the San Diego Union-Tribune and the Voice of San Diego implemented a new system for naming URLs for their stories. My experience is that U-T’s site has problems redirecting users trying to access legacy URLs. The Voice also has a minor issue with that, as well as difficulty with its calendar.

Legacy URLs are the original URLs for older stories that appeared on the previous website. Without a redirect from the legacy link to the new URL, the result is a “404 Page Not Found” error message.

“Page Not Found” is bad for the user and bad for a website. The frustrated user may not be inclined to do extra digging to find the article; instead, (s)he may abandon the search and go elsewhere.

I checked some of my old blog posts that cited articles in the Union-Tribune, and many of them led to a 404 error. When I reported the problem to the U-T, they told me I should change the “www” to “legacy” on the bad links.

The U-T said they are working to get redirects operational. I think those links shouldn’t have broken in the first place. Not ensuring functional automatic redirects before implementing a new website suggests haste in getting the new product out. As of today, I’m still getting those 404 errors.

The Voice of San Diego for the most part seems to have redirection working though I did encounter a dead link the other day. They indicated to me they are still working on the issue. For a while their calendar wasn’t working. Although it’s up now, it contains very little information and calendar navigation is messy and difficult to use. They’re not alone in that though–I think event calendars just inherently defy good design and perhaps website owners don’t think they’re worth the trouble. One thing is sure–calendar widgets on the cheap aren’t going to get you very much.

The U-T also has problems with their search function. For a few days after the new site rolled out, my search for “Sanders budget” turned up no hits at all for 2009 and almost all searches failed to sort results by date correctly. The date sorting problem seems to be fixed now, but the search utility still does a poor job of locating documents. Today, the “Sanders budget” search on U-T’s site listed only 6 documents for all of 2009. The same search on Google gets 91 documents–for the last month alone (site-specific searching is available on Google as an advanced option). It makes me reluctant to use U-T’s search at all.

The Voice of San Diego redesign is still morphing. Sunday morning’s home page devoted a huge chunk of space at the top to a marquee slideshow, a technique I consider superfluous. By afternoon the slideshow was near the bottom of the page, visible only after scrolling down.

The Union-Tribune allocates a generous amount of screentop real estate to advertising, some animated, also an unwelcome distraction in the way it competes with the news.

A major change in Voice of San Diego’s site was to enable comments on all individual articles, but unlike the U-T, anonymous comments are not permitted. While the U-T requires commenters to sign in through Disqus, Facebook, Twitter, or OpenID, it’s still easy to maintain anonymity. On Voice of San Diego you can use a pseudonym for your comment display name but your profile page will show your real name. The reaction I’ve seen to the policy against anonymous comments has been supportive because having to reveal one’s identity encourages responsible discourse.

Overall I’d say the changes to both websites represent an incremental improvement in appearance and functionality but there’s still lots of room for improvement. As for their journalism and editorial direction, I guess my opinion leaks out between the lines on some of my other blog posts from time to time!

Friday spot check: Windansea

Posted by George J. Janczyn on December 4, 2009

A sunny cool 48 degree morning. With luck this is the weekend before the real rains begin. Not many ridable waves because of the high tide. For some reason I always seem to find high tides on my Friday checks.

Power outage scheduled for parts of Del Cerro and San Carlos on Saturday

Posted by George J. Janczyn on December 2, 2009

SDG&E mailed notices on November 19, but just as a reminder or if you missed it, a power outage will occur in the San Carlos/Del Cerro area this Saturday beginning at approximately 10:30pm and may last up to eight hours (or longer if complications develop).

I’m not looking forward to spending a Saturday night without electricity.

According to Karen Bennett, SDG&E’s Planned Outage Coordinator, about 2000 residents will be affected by the routine maintenance project to replace an electrical switch and underground wiring on Park Ridge Blvd. She couldn’t provide details on the affected area but said it extends slightly west but mostly east into San Carlos from Park Ridge Blvd.

Residents have been advised to disconnect sensitive electrical equipment before and during the outage. Assuming that when power resumes it may not immediately be stable, you may want to call their 24-hour contact line to confirm status before reconnecting equipment at 800-211-7343.

Update Dec 6: The power resumed at about 9am, so it was around 10 hours without power for us. This morning the work crew wouldn’t let me take any pictures, saying that someone took pictures at an earlier job and then submitted them to the local news with negative comments about their work. I’ll bet our local politicians wish they could avoid scrutiny for that reason.

Getting our streets fixed

Posted by George J. Janczyn on December 1, 2009

Back on November 16 while driving in my neighborhood on Everglades Avenue I came across a road hazard: broken asphalt around a manhole cover. I filed a report with the San Diego City Street Division on their online service request form. I also had these pictures but the form had no provision for including them.

Tonight, almost three weeks later, I received this email message from the Street Division:

From: “street_service@sandiego.gov”
To: “Janczyn, George”
Content-Class: urn:content-classes:message
Date: Tue, 1 Dec 2009 18:23:20 -0800
Subject: Street Response

Thank you for your recent request to Street Division. We have determined from the information provided that this area of responsibility belongs to: Metro Wastewater Department, they can be reached by calling 619-515-3525, option #2.

Of course it should not have taken almost three weeks for this response which appears to involve no investigation beyond reading my report. It also would have been appropriate and polite for them to have forwarded the problem report to the Wastewater Department themselves instead of telling me to call. I suspect the repair would be carried out by the same crew but it’s a financial responsibility thing.

The city would really do well to develop a 311-reporting service and get departments to communicate with each other, as I recently wrote in this suggestion for dealing with such fix-it problems. In the meanwhile, I’ll make I made the call. While I’m at it, I’ll pass along a copy of this to the U-T’s “Just Fix-it” column.

San Carlos/Del Cerro area businesses open and shut

Posted by George J. Janczyn on December 1, 2009

There are a few more changes taking place at the Keil’s shopping center at Jackson Drive and Navajo Road (see July’s post on the earlier changes here). Its location at the western edge of San Carlos makes it a draw for quite a few shoppers from the neighboring Del Cerro community as well.

The Navajo Community Service Center and police storefront that closed during the summer are definitely not returning — a Mountain Mike’s Pizza is taking over the storefront that they occupied and looks to create some competition with Tivoli Pizza a few doors down. The Yogurt Works (formerly the San Carlos Creamery) has a “for lease” sign in the window. Lastly, Casey’s Place, a home-grown neighborhood recreation center, is empty and the sign is gone.
